Word Ace
Word Ace is a beautifully designed new game for the Palm Pre. The gameplay is a mix between Texas Hold Em’ and Scrabble. The cards contain both a letter and a number. Sequences of betting rounds are interspersed with creating the best word possible from the letters that are already out. The gameplay is very engaging, with both tactical and strategic skills being useful. The winner of each round is the one who accumulates the most points won from betting and creating words. Each rounds winnings are the chips that were bet during the round. Word Ace supports online play, so you can play against real opponents. Points are tracked and achievements are recorded. The game is not easy and plenty of hours of enjoyment can be had from Word Ace.

Playing with real opponents and the ability to upload and view player photos makes this game very engaging and life-like. This Palm Pre app also comes with real-time chat capabilities, which you can use during the game itself. The achievements and gameplay will ensure that you keep coming back, and the ability to play regularly against the same opponents will help you hone your skills and make the game so much more competitive. Icons, menus, and other design aspects are simply top-notch and interface is surprisingly uncluttered and straightforward for an app that is relatively complex and feature-rich. A highly recommended download for all Palm Pre users.

Love it so far, but it does have its quirks. Practice mode doesn’t recognize many (if any) words. The app appears to drop us from a table from time to time but other bits still work on the app so it is hard to tell and one has to exit the app then restart and join a new table, repeat invites etc. And today a new one on me: playing away, have what would be the winning word marked as “use this word” but another player is tagged as winner and gets the pot. Grr.
All that said though, a very nice interface and the app presents a lot of the Pre’s application design features in a very small area. Well done and looking forward to improvements.
