Guitarist’s Reference for the Palm Pre is a useful and colorful new app that delivers everything a guitar owner needs short of a good amp. This Palm Pre app comes with references for chords, scales, arpeggio’s, triads, and notes. You can also tune your guitar using this app. In other words, it lives up to its name and brings a full-fledged guitar reference to your smartphone. You will also find some interactive features, including a Chord Finder that brings up chords that correspond to notes that you entered. There’s a Chord Quiz that can help you refresh your memory as you learn new chords, and it tracks your scores so you can see if you’re improving or not.

The interface is certainly quirky and colorful, but it is very functional indeed – so you won’t find any problems in that department. The text and position diagrams on the strings are clear and relatively high-contrast, so you’ll be able to park your smartphone on a chair a few feet away and practice the diagrams on your guitar quite easily. Each chord and scale comes with an info box that goes into more detail regarding the symbols and corresponding notes associated with it. Some minor issues include the presence of interface elements even when their contents are empty, but otherwise this is a fantastic reference for novice guitarists as well as the pro’s. A welcome addition to the Palm Pre apps catalog.

Concerts by iLike for the Palm Pre is a simple event discovery application that looks up your current location via GPS and presents a list of concerts going on in your area at present and in the near future. The app is very cleanly built with a simple and easy-to-use interface. If you have an account with iLike already, you can sync your favorite artists from there and the app will keep an eye out for them. You can configure the distance around which the app will look for concerts – the app defaults to 150 miles, which is a lot, you might want to bring that down to a more drivable number. You can have the app notify you of upcoming concerts in your area.

You can “bookmark” specific concerts for later attention. For each specific event, the app lets you map out directions, share the event with a friend, add it to your calendar, and see other concerts at the same menu. Sharing with a friend is through email, and the app throws up a new email with pre-filled “check this out” text with a link information about the concert. The app is a little slow to load as it pulls in event information, but is quite snappy once you enter the home screen. The ability to bookmark and add to your calendar is really nice and works flawlessly. Overall, this is a well-designed and useful concert-discovery app on the Palm Pre that comes with some nice calendar integration and an interface that meshes seamlessly with WebOS.

AccuRadio for the Palm Pre is a music streaming application that brings a large selection of online radio right to your smartphone. The range is eclectic, with music to suit everyone’s tastes. Like with other Palm Pre apps, you can leave the app running while listening to music and running other apps or performing other tasks. The home screen is simply a list of available genres. Digging into a genre presents the list of active channels, which in turn begin playing immediately when you tap on one.

With each channel, you can block specific artists from playing. If you enjoy a certain genre but don’t care for a particular set of artists within this genre, you can block them and listen peacefully. The interface is structurally very nice, with the bottom menu bar allowing you to navigate to any screen. AccuRadio also presents a “Now Playing” button to get more artist and album information. The controls also let you pause and skip tracks. The color scheme on the other hand, means that black text is hardly visible on the dark purple background. This leaves the app looking a little unpolished. However, once you get used to the controls you’ll hardly notice these aspects – after all, a radio app is meant to be left on in the background. This is a nice functional radio app for the Palm Pre.

The Music application on the Palm Pre is pretty straightforward and simple. You can view albums and tracks in a simple list view along with the associated cover art. The list of albums shows a number against the cover art representing the number of tracks within the album. Playing a song pulls up basic controls and the ability to randomize playback of tracks or repeat the same track. Swiping across the screen will go to the next or previous track.

You can load music on to the Pre in two ways: First, when the Pre is connected to your computer, the computer simply recognizes it as a mass storage device; you can drag and drop music files into the device this way. The other option is to do it through iTunes, where any DRM-free files can be transferred seamlessly. Either way, your Pre will recognize the file type and pull it into the Music application, so you can organize your music without worrying about where it’s sitting.

The Amazon MP3 application on the Pre allows you to download and stream music files from the Amazon store. Once you find a song you can just hit “buy”, when you’ll be taken to your Amazon account for sign-in (if you haven’t already done so) and it’ll use the payment mechanism setup there. If the charge is unsuccessful, it’ll ask you to update your Amazon account and if you click the proffered link, it’ll take you to Amazon within the Web Browser app. This app works for both 3G and Wi-Fi connections and there is no noticeable difference in streaming quality between the two.

You can play the music file in the background while you’re using other applications on the Pre. One caveat, however, is that there is no way to actually save the mp3 file itself for later offline playback. However, with an unlimited data plan this will not really be an issue, especially since the streaming is uninterrupted and high quality.
