Blackout is one of three new apps released together into the Palm Pre Apps Catalog. It is a simple game where the goal is to turn off all the lights. You are presented with a 5×5 grid of delicious-looking light bulbs. At the start of the game, a random selection of lights are already turned on, and your goal is to end up with all the lights turned off. Clicking on any light bulb toggles the state of adjacent bulbs except the ones that are diagonally adjacent (so any bulb that is vertically or horizontally adjacent will be toggled). Clicking on both a lit or dark bulb is allowed.

There are some configurations from which it is mathematically impossible to put out all the lights. The app shouldn’t present these, but it does. Furthermore, it doesn’t even warn the user when this occurs because the app simply doesn’t have the algorithm to do so. Some credit should go to the developers, since this game uses well-designed icons and doesn’t look garish or tacky. Hopefully updates will fix these “no-solution” states, until then you can have fun first wondering if you can actually turn out all the lights before actually trying to do so.

OpenTable is a restaurant reservation and reviews application for the Palm Pre. It lets you make free reservations in thousands of restaurants across the country with immediate confirmation of your reservation. The app is location-aware, so you can see restaurants close to your current location as well as view their availability. Sorting options include price, cuisine and availability. The app can be extremely useful on traditionally busy nights, weekends, and holidays. The app stands head-and-shoulders above its similarly themed competitors because in addition to letting you actually make reservations from within the app, it also lets you see the menu and integrates very well with other WebOS functions.

Other features are similar to what GoodFood offers: user reviews, ratings, location-aware mapping, directions to the establishment from your current location, etc. The OpenTable app also lets you send a quick email from within the app with restaurant and reservation details. The app integrates well with your Pre calendar, so reservations can be scheduled appropriately with your other appointments. This is one of the more comprehensive and interactive Palm Pre Apps and will be useful for almost every Pre owner and, for now, makes other restaurant and food review apps redundant on your Palm Pre.

The Stopwatch/Timer app for the Palm Pre is a well-designed timer application that is really friendly on the eyes with large numbers, buttons, and controls. It comes with a timer that is excellent for cooking and other uses even when your Pre is at a safe distance away from the action because the numbers are highly visible on a dark background. If you prefer you can change the theme between dark and light shades. The stopwatch function lets you track lap times and allows you to split sessions with a single tap. Everything is nicely labelled and intuitive and you’ll be able to just start using it without a fuss.

You can save all your times by selecting a preference button (recommended) and you can also select the precision you will need in the preferences section. In future updates I would love to see the ability to add different user-generated categories, such as billable hours, or study sessions. As it stands now, it’s still quite usable for these purposes, especially since you can just leave the app running in the background while you do other stuff on your Pre. Another feature to look forward to would be voice activation once Palm exposes the right hooks for the developers. A sleak and simple timer and stopwatch application for the Palm Pre.

NFL Mobile Live for the Palm Pre was installed along with the WebOS 1.1 update. Like the Nascar app, this app was installed on all devices and will come pre-installed on all new Pre’s from now on. It’s also not possible to uninstall this app from the Pre. It has been better received than the Nascar application and is actually a very well-designed app with only a handful of minor interface issues. With this app you can track the progress of NFL games, teams, and players. You can even setup and play a fantasy series from within the application. The app shows scores (live) and schedules, standings, and news. It comes with video and audio, and I must say the video-on-demand is excellent quality.

The one issue I have with the app is the presence of drop-down menus within the meat of the app. I generally like to see rich content in the middle of the screen and menus banished to the top or the bottom. However, the functionality is very slick and a little time spent with the app will no doubt allow you to get used to any such interface issues. There’s a wealth of data available and you can chose to get notification regarding your favorite teams and players instead of constantly hitting up the app or the website. The NFL Mobile app, while taking up another impossible-to-recover space on the launcher, is an excellent app for sports enthusiasts in general and NFL fans in particular.

Some exciting developments in the Homebrewed Palm Pre Apps community this past week: at 31 apps, there are now more homebrew apps than official app catalog apps. As you must know by now, homebrew apps are applications that aren’t available through Palm’s official app catalog, but need to be installed (“sideloaded”) through other means. Some of the new ones are quite exciting, including an app to play good old Tetris and an “active screen” app that modifies your Palm Pre homescreen to show calendar events, latest news, the weather, and other widgets.

There is significant progress being made in making the installation process for these homebrew apps much easier and pain-free. There is now a working desktop installer for Windows (still needs a little polishing though) that does a lot of the work for you. All of this is still not really ready for the mainstream but serves as a strong indicator that there’s a healthy developer community working away on apps for the Palm Pre. Even better, once Palm decides to open up the developer program a little further, these apps will soon be available right from within the App Catalog. Excited? So are we!

The Sprint TV app is a stock app that comes installed with the Palm Pre. I consider it one of the more underrated of Palm Pre apps. While the Sprint TV of yore used to offer a much wider and higher quality selection of shows (Cartoon Network, CNN live, etc.), this app is still well-designed and offers a nice way to kill a few minutes even with a more limited selection. This Palm Pre app offers on demand TV shows from a variety of channels including the Weather Channel and Disney. It comes with several full-length episodes of popular shows as well as short sneak peeks.

The interface is clean and easy-to-use. Playback is smooth and stutter-free for the most part. Unfortunately the app does not remember where you last stopped watching a show, an invaluable feature that should be a must with most streaming video players. With the ability to watch certain live broadcasts, on-demand episodes of some shows, and customized mobile offerings, this is a solid entertainment app for the Palm Pre.

The SplashID Palm Pre app is a utility to store private data such as passwords, credit card numbers, and banking details. It acts as a secure password manager and this application will prompt you for a master password when you want to open it on your Pre. The app allows you to set various fields that are searchable and identifiable by you, and you can decide whether you want each field to be visible or not. So you can mask whatever fields you like, and there are more than one for each entry. The app offers search-as-you-type.

The first time I launched the app, it froze for a few seconds before it allowed me to move forward – I wasn’t able to reproduce this even after uninstalling and installing it again so it’s probably no big deal. The app is still in its early stages in other respects as well. There is little ability to customize search parameters for instance – the search will always only parse the first of the many fields. There’s really no way to export your information from the Pre, so backups are out of the question for now. Perhaps an update will provide this much-needed functionality.

The AP News Palm Pre app, like its siblings on other smartphones, is an excellent News app that helps you stay current with local, national, and international News. The application serves up multiple news feed from AP and other wire services into one clean, easy-to-use interface. Stories come with user-ratings and related photos. About 10% of the screen is given up to advertising near the top, just below the menu bar. You can customize the home screen of the app to your liking from several different categories.

You can search the AP news service right from within the app. The search feature is available with a single tap from every screen on the app and is reasonably quick and responsive. I would have liked to see the ability to search within a given news story, but that functionality is not offered yet. The breadth of member services offering feeds into this app easily makes this app more useful than the New York Times app previously reviewed. This is a true News junkie’s app.

This is a fantastic and well-executed app for the Palm Pre that covers most of what you’ll ever want with the movie-going experience. You can see ratings, reviews, trailers, and even purchase tickets with this application. It automatically discovers your location and displays theaters close to your current location and you can just save your favorite theaters.

It does all of this with an intuitive and easy-to-user interface. Trailers automatically appear in landscape mode and the quality is excellent with no stuttering at all. The video buffering is intelligent even on slow or overloaded WiFi networks. Once you purchase tickets, the event is automagically added to your Pre’s calendar. There’s a lot of attention to detail with this app, and it shows a treasure trove of information on any movie, including cast, run time, photos, and more. If you’re a movie buff, this is the app for you.
