One of the newer breeds of paid apps on the Palm App Catalog, Wobble Words is a word search game that pulls together bits of gameplay from other timeless games to offer an interesting and engaging application on the Palm Pre. The basic premise is to find as many words as possible against the clock. You form words by drawing gestures on a four-letter by four-letter grid. As you find words, new letters show up. Roughly speaking, you get more points for bigger words, but there’s finer grained points to be had since each letter has a specific number of points associated with it.

The scoring system is very well-designed, with intermittent “blank” letters that can play the role of any and all letters that complete a word. This means one or two “blanks” can push your score very high pretty quickly. You can also sacrifice points to refresh the grid completely to have another go if you’re drawing a blank on the current one. The interface and look-and-feel is very polished and customizable. Most aspects of the game are configurable, including sound, “shake to clear” and the theme. Overall, this is an excellent game for the Palm Pre – engaging, interesting, and easy on the eyes.

The PicHunt series of apps for the Palm Pre from the makers of EspnZoom are a set of games where your goal is to discover small differences between two seemingly identical images. The games are played in landscape mode on your smartphone and present two images side-by-side. At the top of the screen you’ll find a timer running down, so you’ll have to find the differences against the clock. Once you locate a difference, you’ll have to tap the corresponding location on either of the images and PicHunt will acknowledge that you scored a point by highlighting your difference. If you imagine there’s a difference where none exists, you’ll find the app doing a subtle “shake” when you tap on the wrong spot.

Each game session comes with up to three hints (with usually five differences to spot). The icons that show that you correctly picked a spot are all customized. For example, in the Vintage Cars version of the app the icons are old 3-spoked steering wheels. Tapping in the little “i” at the top right of your screen will take you to information about the image (in the Vintage Cars case, it’ll give you the model name), and a link to a web resource with the image. Clicking on “Tell a friend” will launch the email app for you and you can send off a pre-filled email with a link to the image (there’s something interesting about the subject line with this version of the app, it is left to the reader to figure it out). Overall, this app for the Palm Pre smartphone is quite addicting and you can even learn about specific topics - a good way to sharpen the old noggin with the morning cup of coffee.

The design quality of games on the Palm Pre is now approaching those available on that other major smartphone. After “Spades” and similar efforts there was some concern around quality control with respect to the fit-and-finish in Palm Pre Apps. Fear no more: Reversi and some of the newer apps including Dots, and Word Ace have dispelled any such concerns. Reversi is a polished implementation of the popular strategy game which also goes by the name of “Othello.” Reversi is a two-player strategy board game played on an 8×8 grid with colored disks representing each player. The app itself launches with a nice background slideshow of nineteenth century Reversi boards.

Other thoughtful touches include separate views presenting the history of the game and a help and about screen. The game lets you vary the difficulty of the computer opponent, but you may find even the most difficult setting to be easily beatable. You can also let the Pre show you your next possible moves along with the flip count for the move. Hopefully the computer will have improved algorithms with subsequent updates. For now, you may find the game a little too easy and the app loses some of its appeal as a result. Overall, Reversi is a well-designed and thoughtful game for your smartphone, and is sure to become quite popular once the algorithm is improved to make it a little more challenging.

Survivor is an exclusive rich-media app for the Palm Pre. It pulls together several aspects of the popular television series, including episodes & clips and biographies. The app comes with a fantasy league and a “Player of the week” game with real prizes from Sprint. You can enter your contest answers right from within the app. The app’s homescreen has a nice horizontal scrolling portfolio of the cast members, and clicking on one of them pulls up the relevant biography. The interface has impressive overlays and effects that make it one of the better-designed Palm Pre apps.

In addition to the full episodes and clips, the app comes with a little “Survivor Guide” where you can see details about the locations and maps of Samoa island. Each of the views are accessible from the homescreen of the app or through control buttons at the bottom of every view. If you’re a fan of Survivor and are looking to engage with the show in more ways, this is a fantastic application that brings in a very wide range of extra features that should enhance your experience of the show. Overall, one of the better-looking apps on the Pre and one that will appeal to a niche audience.

Dot Game is a simple and enjoyable Palm Pre app where players take turns to fill-in boxes in a grid. The player with the most number of boxes at the end is the winner. This app doesn’t offer games over the network but you can play with a computer opponent – which is pretty good and comes with three levels of difficulty. The design is sensible and simple and it’s clear that some attention has been paid in developing the game. Dot Game comes with three nice themes, including a “crayon” version that really imitates the paper-and-pencil game of yore.

There’s also an option to require a box, and the ability to vary the size of the grid. The computer opponent is quite good and with the large grid option, you may find yourself playing for far longer than expected. Overall, this a simple and well-designed Palm Pre app.

Checkers is one of a few Palm Pre apps that have graduated from the burgeoning homebrew apps scene into the official Palm App Catalog. It is a beautifully designed and enjoyable game for the Palm Pre. Checkers lets you play with the computer and it also support a two-player mode. One aspect of the app that is immediately impressive is the support screen that lists the developing company’s website, email, and even telephone number! The support page includes instructions for the game as well. You move each piece by tapping once on the piece and then tapping again on the target square where you intend the piece to go. Gameplay is very good, and the computer is certainly a reasonable challenge.

Preferences includes the ability to select between three board themes – Original, Classic, and Faces. The screenshot above is the Classic theme. Within the preferences screen you can also turn haptic feedback and sounds on or off. One-player options also let you turn on the “cheat-mode” which basically lets you move forward and backward. You can change the play style between Normal, Careful, and Aggressive here as well. Achievements are tracked and are visible in a separate view. Overall, this is a well-designed classic game of checkers with solid gameplay and a pleasing interface. The various options to adjust gameplay and two-player mode will no-doubt leave you revisiting this application often on your Palm Pre.

Zilch Lite is a dice game for the Palm Pre. Zilch is a two-player game mixing skill and chance with six dice. You can play against the computer in this lite version for the Pre. The goal is to score 10,000 points before your opponent (the computer in this case). Points are scored based on a predetermined chart. For example, rolling three 6′s will net you 600 points. Out of the six dice, some will fall with a scoring pattern (like the three 6′s) and the rest can fall with no scoring pattern (say two 2′s and a 3). You can either take a “Stand,” which will end your turn with whatever points you have gained so far, or you can re-roll the non-scoring dice. If, on the re-roll, you score zero points, you lose all your point gained on this turn so far – this event is called a “Zilch.”

When played live, I imagine most of the fun comes from anticipating the roll and counting your score against the chart. With this version, since the computer does all the counting, you may find yourself compulsively rolling the dice and moving the game along. The large scores (the minimum increment is a 100) also encourage the user to move along quickly. Most of the skill in this game is reduced to judging whether or not you want to take a Stand or continue rolling. This decision is usually based on how much of a lead you have or are trying to make up. The full version will probably allow playing against a live opponent, which should make the game significantly more fun. For now, Word Ace retains the title of the best game on the Palm Pre smartphone, though Zilch Lite may be quite engaging for those who swear by dice-based games.

Bubbles is the Palm Pre version of the popular and addictive bubble bursting game. This version is quite beautifully done and offers a relatively complete version of the game, with four different varieties for you to try your hand at. Bubbles is a product of the same developers as Spades for the Palm Pre, but this is a more polished and cleaner app. The bubbles icons are satisfyingly beautiful. Like Spades, it has a finger-width area at the bottom of the screen dedicated to advertisement. You can chose between smaller and larger bubbles. The game comes in four variants: Normal, Continues, Super, and Super-Shifter. All of them are pretty enjoyable and can keep you coming back to beat your own high scores which are tracked for each variant.

There are no controls or major interface elements near the bottom so tapping an ad by accident is nearly impossible. Tapping the ad will launch the browser in a separate card and keep your game uninterrupted. The ad changes every time you tap a bubble, which can be a little distracting. You can turn off sounds for the game in case you’re playing in a library or other place with a need for silence. Unfortunately you can’t save the state of a game, you’ll just have to keep a card running if you are interrupted mid-game and need to come back to it at a later time. Overall, Bubbles is clean, simple, and relatively well-implemented. A worthwhile download that compares well with other implementations of the game on other smartphones.

Word Ace is a beautifully designed new game for the Palm Pre. The gameplay is a mix between Texas Hold Em’ and Scrabble. The cards contain both a letter and a number. Sequences of betting rounds are interspersed with creating the best word possible from the letters that are already out. The gameplay is very engaging, with both tactical and strategic skills being useful. The winner of each round is the one who accumulates the most points won from betting and creating words. Each rounds winnings are the chips that were bet during the round. Word Ace supports online play, so you can play against real opponents. Points are tracked and achievements are recorded. The game is not easy and plenty of hours of enjoyment can be had from Word Ace.

Playing with real opponents and the ability to upload and view player photos makes this game very engaging and life-like. This Palm Pre app also comes with real-time chat capabilities, which you can use during the game itself. The achievements and gameplay will ensure that you keep coming back, and the ability to play regularly against the same opponents will help you hone your skills and make the game so much more competitive. Icons, menus, and other design aspects are simply top-notch and interface is surprisingly uncluttered and straightforward for an app that is relatively complex and feature-rich. A highly recommended download for all Palm Pre users.

Spades on the Palm Pre offers a version of this popular card game (which belongs to the same family as Bridge, and Hearts) on WebOS. It’s a multiplayer game with up to four players, but can also be played with just two players without compromising the gameplay too much. The app definitely needs more polish. The interface is unpleasant but functional once you get the hang of what goes where. To its credit, the cards are clearly visible and don’t feel particularly crowded. About a finger-width’s vertical space at the bottom is dedicated to advertising. The ads usually contain a single icon at the left followed by text. Though I can imagine this format changing in the future.

This Palm Pre app comes with landscape mode which makes it easier for you to read and follow things. The built-in computer opponent is not very smart at present, but future updates will probably increase the intelligence in the algorithm to offer at least a little more challenging gameplay. Another major problem is that this app appears to be a significant battery drain – at least more so than a simple card app should be. Overall, this is a relatively unpolished app with an unsophisticated computer opponent and is a tad too heavy on the battery. You may find it easy to overlook these shortcomings if you are a fan of the game itself, but the casual player may find it useful to wait for updates to bring improvements.
