The Classic app has also seen some updates that improve performance of these emulated apps. Now, all of these thousands of apps are available in one place: the Classic App Store. The apps are well sorted and categorized, you can explore to your hearts content.

If you haven’t downloaded and used a Classic emulated app before, here’s how to do it: Connect your Palm Pre to your computer with the USB cable and enable the USB Drive mode on your Pre. You’ll need to copy the “PRC” file that you get when you download a legacy app into the “ClassicApps” folder on your Pre. Launch the Classic app on your Palm Pre after disconnecting the USB cable, and you’ll see the new app under the “internal” category of the Palm OS launcher.

It allows you to run a vast choice of applications that were developed for the earlier Palm OS. Apps that are years old can be run pretty smoothly on Classic on your Palm Pre. This is really useful if you were a previous Palm handheld owner and had already downloaded or purchased applications. Palm had a healthy ecosystem of applications, so you can find plenty of old apps that can be quite useful.

There are also several good games available, if you can’t wait to start gaming on your Pre. The apps running on Classic can feel a little cramped at first, because Classic overlays a set of older Palm controls on the apps. However, since the earlier apps were all developed for devices which much smaller screen sizes, the flow and interfaces aren’t as compromised as one might expect. Classic runs these applications pretty smoothly, without any noticeable lag.
