Classic

Classic is a paid application selling for $29.99 on the Palm Pre App Catalog at the moment. It allows you to run a vast choice of applications that were developed for the earlier Palm OS. Apps that are years old can be run pretty smoothly on Classic on your Palm Pre. This is really useful if you were a previous Palm handheld owner and had already downloaded or purchased applications. Palm had a healthy ecosystem of applications, so you can find plenty of old apps that can be quite useful.

There are also several good games available, if you can’t wait to start gaming on your Pre. The apps running on Classic can feel a little cramped at first, because Classic overlays a set of older Palm controls on the apps. However, since the earlier apps were all developed for devices which much smaller screen sizes, the flow and interfaces aren’t as compromised as one might expect. Classic runs these applications pretty smoothly, without any noticeable lag.

Unfortunately, most of the older apps I would want to use this with assume a stylus based GUI. With the Pre’s capacitive touchscreen a stylus (or any handy point object) doesn’t work. And my fingers are not small enough to provide the resolution to use the apps (e.g. Scrabble, scientific calculator, etc.) without countless pointing errors. I’m afraid I’m gong to have to let the trial period expire on this one and wait for the same apps to be developed specifically for the Pre.

Looks like the Palm I am used to, but way too expensive to run old apps. Also, why does it not include the whole menu of apps for this price and several buttons and menu options don’t work yet.

I’ll have to agree w/Joe Ducey on this however, I wish I’d used the trial version instead of “wasting” my money on the purchase.
