Twee is the much awaited Twitter client for the Palm Pre smartphone. It offers a unique and interesting interface and a range of features that rivals its closest competitor: Tweed. Most features on Twee are a single tap away. You can see timelines, followers, following and trends in addition to direct messages all via a bottom menu bar. Notifications are fully integrated and work well the WebOS flow. The app is relatively fast, and unlike Spaz doesn’t take as long to load the first screen on launch.

Uploading images and sending location information in your tweets is easy and straightforward. The interface is functional and an improvement on Spaz, but definitely not as clean as Tweed’s. Icons still need some attention and polish, but are very usable as is. The app uses a dark background with light text throughout, which some people might prefer. Twee is relatively responsive and quick with showing new views. Overall, Twee for the Palm Pre is a healthy competitor to Tweed, and offers a full range of Twitter features that will leave even power-users quite satisfied.

Like with “Tweed” (reviewed here previously), this Twitter app for the Palm Pre doesn’t need you to login to browse or search twitter. The public timeline as well as popular trends are also visible without logging in. The app takes a little longer to load than I would like, but is reasonably spiffy once it’s up and running. Unfortunately, the Palm Pre’s excellent notification system isn’t put to good use here: new tweets and searches do not show up as notifications. You can send a new tweet from anywhere within the application by tapping the icon on the lower left corner of your screen.

The design is very busy, and you may find the interface taking a little getting used to. It does not use design elements that go with the Pre’s WebOS user interface, but this isn’t the only app on the catalog to have this as a fault. Basic Twitter functionality works, and that’s really what matters. Between Spaz and Tweed, you might find Tweed easier to use and more feature-filled, especially with its recent updates. Tweed is also simply better designed, cleaner, and more of a joy to use.

Tweed is a sleek, fast, and functional Twitter application for the Palm Pre. My favorite thing about is that you can send a new tweet from wherever you are on the application with a single tap. It really makes it dead simple to send a tweet. It also has a few other thoughtful touches, such as the ability to change font sizes, and use multiple accounts. In addition to being able to search twitter and browse twitter trends, you can bookmark these for later perusal. You can filter tweets and only look at your direct messages, and it’s very easy to reply to and retweet messages.

Notifications pop-up like other Pre notifications, as a small status bar at the bottom of the screen. New tweets and the status of just sent tweets and confirmations all appear as unobtrusive notifications. You can use Tweed even if you don’t have a twitter account to search and browse twitter. This is a really elegantly done application – lots of attention to detail. Tweed is free and available on the App Catalog now.
