Newsroom is an advanced RSS and News reader for the Palm Pre. The app lets you add News and RSS feeds, and can show full articles optimized for the Palm Pre’s layout and interface. In this sense, it can completely replace the Web browser for News-oriented browsing. The interface is excellent, and the perfectly formatted articles will let you actually read the content instead of zooming in and out at various spots. Going from one unread article to the next is as simple as swiping left or right across the Pre’s screen. Feeds are listed on a grid as icons that show the number of unread articles for each feed. You can have several pages of icons as you add more feeds.

You can add new feeds by searching for a feed or browsing a list of featured ones. You can also add an RSS feed directly by entering the URL. Newsroom integrates perfectly with the notification system and prompts you when new articles come in. There’s no way to read all new articles in one go, you’ll need to visit each page and tap on the icons with new numbers on them for each new article. Overall, this is a powerful and polished News and RSS reader with full-article support (not just snippets) and custom formatting that will almost certainly fulfill all your News browsing needs on the Palm Pre.

The Forbes application for the Palm Pre is a fantastic business and finance news source app and the first Palm Pre app to offer offline syncing that lets you download articles for reading on a flight or metro where there’s no signal or WiFi. This app lets you see articles from all major categories on Forbes and also presents articles ranked by popularity, freshness, and most emailed. An area near the top of the app just below the menu bar is dedicated to relevant Forbes-related advertising. Clicking on the ad will launch the browser without disturbing your current place in the Forbes app.

You can track your financial portfolio and the major world indices through this app as well. The really thoughtful and impressive feature is the offline sync. If you are entering an area with no cellular or WiFi reception, you can simply download all the current articles and your stocks portfolio data to your Pre and read and follow the articles completely offline. The download process is smooth and fast and worked like a charm. With this capability, Forbes on the Palm Pre leaps well beyond the other News apps on the App Catalog at present. Forbes brings both current news and in-depth analysis so you won’t be left wanting for more with this app. Forbes is a must-download News application for the Palm Pre.

The AP News Palm Pre app, like its siblings on other smartphones, is an excellent News app that helps you stay current with local, national, and international News. The application serves up multiple news feed from AP and other wire services into one clean, easy-to-use interface. Stories come with user-ratings and related photos. About 10% of the screen is given up to advertising near the top, just below the menu bar. You can customize the home screen of the app to your liking from several different categories.

You can search the AP news service right from within the app. The search feature is available with a single tap from every screen on the app and is reasonably quick and responsive. I would have liked to see the ability to search within a given news story, but that functionality is not offered yet. The breadth of member services offering feeds into this app easily makes this app more useful than the New York Times app previously reviewed. This is a true News junkie’s app.

The Sporting News Palm Pre app is atrociously designed, but highly functional. And if you’re a baseball fan you’ll find it very easy to overlook the aesthetics and focus on the data. And it’s really quite good at serving up data. It offers scores and statistics across leagues, and you can also see your favorite teams’ statistics, standings, and schedules. There’s also a provision for you to create your very own fantasy team in the app, but I’m not sure how many will actually use this feature.

You can set certain teams as your favorites, which allows one-click access to the teams data from the app’s home page, as well as basic scores and statistics available right from the app home screen. The app offers a balanced combination of baseball statistics and news, and there’s really nothing missing from the application in terms of features. The design could do with some improvement and maybe we’ll see updates that address this issue.

The New York Times application on the Palm Pre is a news reader app that isn’t that much better than the New York Times mobile website. It is slightly faster to load and browse around than when you have multiple browser cards open. You can see the latest and breaking news, but you will need to refresh the app after a while to see the latest even if you leave it running in the background - there’s no way to automatically refresh or have news sent to the notification bar.

Similarly, content isn’t much different from simply browsing the mobile web version. What I would have liked to see is options to automatically refresh or pull the latest feeds from the NYT, or at least have some sort of notifications appear that provides information on breaking news. For news junkies, this doesn’t really cut it. For the casual news reader checking in every few hours, it works pretty well. If you enjoy logically separating your news from your browsing, this is definitely very useful.
