MoreStocks is a high-quality and powerful stocks and financial markets application for the Palm Pre. You can track specific US and international stocks and indices and create, manage, and follow your own portfolio on the app. Instruments can be added by symbol name or company name. The portfolio screen shows the full instrument name, the symbol, current price, and absolute points and percentage changes. You can refresh for up-to-date date and numbers are available intraday.

Needless to say, you need an active cellular data or Wi-Fi connection to use this app. Charting is surprisingly good and quick. You can see trading charts for intraday as well as longer periods easily. Analyzing charts shouldn’t be something you do on a mobile device, but this is pretty much as good as it gets. Notifications integrate well with WebOS and interface is clean and simple. Overall, this is a useful stock market app that covers all the basics and does it in a polished and easy-to-use manner.

Brought to you by the same folks who developed Translator for the Palm Pre, the Currency Converter app on the Palm Pre lets you convert between currencies from a very wide range of countries. It uses the Yahoo service, which is both comprehensive and accurate. The basic home screen presents you with an input field and a choice of two currencies (to and from). You can swap your conversion direction with a simple tap on the button in between. The input field accepts pretty large denominations so you won’t be left in the cold when you’re traveling to countries with large denominations. The selection of currencies is truly enormous and you should have no fear that any of your specific countries will be left out. Unfortunately, there’s no way to set favorite currencies for those who travel to selected destination frequently.

The Currency Converter app for the Pre comes with caching – so the app doesn’t call to the server every time you do a conversion. It saves the conversion rate for a set period before reloading it. You can change this reload rate in the preferences menu and clear the cache through the top menu drop-down. Options regarding the reload rate range from every five minutes to every week – you’ll probably want to go with something in-between, perhaps every 12 to 24 hours. Anything faster will be network and battery intensive for no noticeable gain. Finally, the best option is the “shake to reload” option that updates the cached rates when you shake your Palm Pre. This may appear gimmicky at first, but it’s very useful in saving unnecessary calls to the server, as long as you remember to shake your smartphone every time you use this app. A function and simple Palm Pre app that every traveler will find invaluable.

The Forbes application for the Palm Pre is a fantastic business and finance news source app and the first Palm Pre app to offer offline syncing that lets you download articles for reading on a flight or metro where there’s no signal or WiFi. This app lets you see articles from all major categories on Forbes and also presents articles ranked by popularity, freshness, and most emailed. An area near the top of the app just below the menu bar is dedicated to relevant Forbes-related advertising. Clicking on the ad will launch the browser without disturbing your current place in the Forbes app.

You can track your financial portfolio and the major world indices through this app as well. The really thoughtful and impressive feature is the offline sync. If you are entering an area with no cellular or WiFi reception, you can simply download all the current articles and your stocks portfolio data to your Pre and read and follow the articles completely offline. The download process is smooth and fast and worked like a charm. With this capability, Forbes on the Palm Pre leaps well beyond the other News apps on the App Catalog at present. Forbes brings both current news and in-depth analysis so you won’t be left wanting for more with this app. Forbes is a must-download News application for the Palm Pre.

Dumb Waiter is another tip-calculator for the Palm Pre. While the previously reviewed “Tip ‘em!” scored well in design and functionality, Dumb Waiter brings a little fun to the table with the ability to grade your server based on various parameters such as how quickly the menus were brought to your table. The interface is much more conventional in Dumb Waiter and fits in well with the Pre’s built-in menus and buttons. The tip amount is shown right at the top, which is nice. There’s no way to split the tab with Dumb Waiter, which is a huge oversight for any worthy tip-calculator. You can set the percentage tip amount based on the total bill. This tip amount is then modulated up or down depending on how you rate your server.

This is where the fun starts. You can rate your server based on Attitude (Friendly, Neutral, Rude, Downright Mean), Accuracy, Cleanliness, and how long it took to do various things. The speed with which your menus, drinks, starters, meal, and the check were brought to you can all be graded from “What’s taking so long!?” to “Too Quickly.” Depending on how you pick these options, the tip amount based on the percentage of the bill is then pushed upwards (turning the tip amount green in color) or pulled downwards (turning the tip red). The app can probably be very cathartic in situations where you have been very poorly served or when you’re looking to justify a low tip (hey! the Palm Pre told me to undertip!). Dumb Waiter is a fun tip-calculator for the Palm Pre, but certainly falls behind Tip ‘em! in terms of features and design quality.

You can judge a smartphone these days by looking at how much attention has been paid in designing a tip-calculator for it. Luckily for the Palm Pre, the developers of Tip ‘em! have built a tasteful and well-designed tip-calculator that does everything you need from such an app and bit more. The app presents fixed fields that you can modify by tapping on them and entering your check amount, the percentage tip that you want to add and how many people you want to split the tab with. You can even exclude the tax and other charges by entering them in a separate exclusion field. You can tip between 0% and 30% with this app, which should suffice for most situations. The design is in the form of an old-fashioned note-card placed on a checked tablecloth – very reminiscent of a small country diner.

The app accepts a maximum check amount of four digits, which should hold up fine unless inflation goes through the roof, in which case tipping accurately will be the least of our worries. However, that means Pre users who travel to parts of the world with higher denomination currencies will find this app a little difficult to use (you could divide and multiply by hundred to accommodate things). You can split the tab by up to ten people. I tried to push the app a little by excluding more than the check amount, and it manages just fine without running into trouble with negative numbers and such. Overall, this Palm Pre app is visually delightful and easy-to-use. If you dine out frequently with quite a few people, it will save you a lot of headache.

The Intuit GoPayment app on the Palm Pre App Catalog allows you to make a credit card charge while traveling or otherwise away from your regular card reader. The system also works with two models of bluetooth enabled card-readers – but you don’t need them for the app to work because you can enter a number manually as well. It works with all major credit cards and the transaction is processed instantly with a confirmation screen showing the charged amount and the very nice ability to email or sms a receipt to the customer right then and there.

The Intuit GoPayment application itself is free on the Catalog, but the system costs $19.95 per month plus transaction fees and a one-time setup fee (all payable to Intuit). There are discounts for transactions involving the major credit card networks. Multiple employees can be added to a single GoPayment account. This is a valuable and serious Palm Pre app that should really help Palm get a foot in the door in the enterprise market. If you’re a small business owner with a team in the field, this Palm Pre app may be an invaluable addition to your infrastructure.

Express Stocks is a pretty useful stock and finance news application on the Palm Pre. You can add stocks and symbols from exchanges listed in up to eight countries (in Europe, and the Americas). You can use this app to track US and most international market indices as well. It also comes with the AP Business wire service, so you can view AP news and company profiles for individual stocks and symbols that you pull up. You could also sort of use it as a business news reader, since you can just read the AP business news alone.

Drawbacks include the need to manually refresh the stock feeds. Plus there’s no real way to upgrade to a faster ticker that’s closer to real-time. There’s also the presence of advertising, though it’s pretty small and unobtrusive. For simple portfolio tracking and keeping up to date with the market a few times day, this app works great. If you’re on Wall Street and a derivatives professional, you may have to wait for Bloomberg to come out with their own Palm Pre apps.
