The Facebook app for the Palm Pre is here. It is an official app, but it remains a little barebones for now, but updates are in the works and should roll out steadily. The app features the live main feed, but seems to ignore any filters you might have applied – so you’ll still receive updates from feeds you’ve categorically excluded. Everything else works very well, and fits nicely into the WebOS interface. You can view and share photographs and updates, and like or unlike status updates from your friends.

Links open in new Browser card views, and YouTube videos will automatically launch the corresponding WebOS app. You can manually refresh the feeds. Thankfully the app is pretty light on battery usage, hopefully additional updates will still maintain this excellent feature. Right now, you can follow your friends’ updates, send out your own, and share photos. Joining and creating groups, chat, and other features are yet to be seen. It’s a functional and well-designed start.

Survivor is an exclusive rich-media app for the Palm Pre. It pulls together several aspects of the popular television series, including episodes & clips and biographies. The app comes with a fantasy league and a “Player of the week” game with real prizes from Sprint. You can enter your contest answers right from within the app. The app’s homescreen has a nice horizontal scrolling portfolio of the cast members, and clicking on one of them pulls up the relevant biography. The interface has impressive overlays and effects that make it one of the better-designed Palm Pre apps.

In addition to the full episodes and clips, the app comes with a little “Survivor Guide” where you can see details about the locations and maps of Samoa island. Each of the views are accessible from the homescreen of the app or through control buttons at the bottom of every view. If you’re a fan of Survivor and are looking to engage with the show in more ways, this is a fantastic application that brings in a very wide range of extra features that should enhance your experience of the show. Overall, one of the better-looking apps on the Pre and one that will appeal to a niche audience.

DIRECTV NFL is one of the meatier new Palm Pre apps. In order to use this app on your Pre, you’ll need a subscription to Directv’s NFL Sunday Ticket. If you have this subscription you can register at the Directv website, where it’ll ask for confirmation of your account information. You can’t register from within the app, unfortunately. The app immediately points out that it’s data intensive, which also reads as “battery hungry,” so it might be worthwhile to pay attention to the battery indicator while using this app. Directv NFL streams video and audio of live and archived NFL games directly to your Pre. In addition, it comes with a plethora of news and statistics features that’s an NFL fan’s dream.

Subscribers to Directv’s SuperFan module have an even higher number of features to play with, including real-time highlights, live announcers and live score updates for every single game. You also get full access to the Red Zone channel. The app is very well designed and presents a wealth of media in a simple and intuitive manner. Data on games and statistics really are uploaded live, with a barely noticeable delay. Streaming video quality is fantastic, but an option to view lower quality or lower resolution video for those on a slower Wi-Fi network or those concerned about battery life would have done wonders. This is one of the best Palm Pre apps currently available, but only works for those with an existing Directv NFL Sunday subscription.

Match.com is a front-end to the popular dating site on the Palm Pre. You can search for and browse profiles of other members of Match.com with this location-aware application. Signing-up to the site is free and can be done with no hassles from right within the app on your Pre. If the GPS location detection fails for whatever reason, the app falls back on your zipcode to narrow down searches. Profile information includes the last date of activity on the site, location information, photos, and other basic information that users opt to share. You can message people and track your favorite profiles from within the application. You can track interactions with other members easily through a “Connections” tab.

This app remembers your login and password so you won’t have to keep typing them in every time you launch the application. The interface is pretty clean and offers collapsible sections that really help you absorb profile information easily. The search feature is location-aware and allows you to search based on various criteria, including age range, and allows you to limit results to profiles with shared photos only. You can also narrow your search based on distance and other factors. Overall, this is a full-featured networking and dating app on the Palm Pre and the presence of messaging, favorites, and the ability to track connections makes this an excellent complement to the website itself.

The Sprint TV app is a stock app that comes installed with the Palm Pre. I consider it one of the more underrated of Palm Pre apps. While the Sprint TV of yore used to offer a much wider and higher quality selection of shows (Cartoon Network, CNN live, etc.), this app is still well-designed and offers a nice way to kill a few minutes even with a more limited selection. This Palm Pre app offers on demand TV shows from a variety of channels including the Weather Channel and Disney. It comes with several full-length episodes of popular shows as well as short sneak peeks.

The interface is clean and easy-to-use. Playback is smooth and stutter-free for the most part. Unfortunately the app does not remember where you last stopped watching a show, an invaluable feature that should be a must with most streaming video players. With the ability to watch certain live broadcasts, on-demand episodes of some shows, and customized mobile offerings, this is a solid entertainment app for the Palm Pre.

Shortcovers is an Ebook reader and Ebook marketplace app for the Palm Pre. It carries thousands of books, chapters, articles, and magazines with excerpts available for each as well as the ability to buy from within the application. You can also buy individual chapters for certain books. There are many classics available for free at the moment within the marketplace. Pricing is actually very reasonable, and the chapter offers are particularly useful for certain technical books. Navigation and reading is on par with other smartphones (but nothing like the Kindle).

You can sort by featured, popular, rating, and price. You can also simply search the marketplace for titles and authors. The one thing I’d like to see in the next version is the ability to search for words within a book or article. In all other respects, this is a well thought out application that is very easy to use and particularly useful for short, bite-sized reads while flying or traveling the subway. The Shortcovers application is available in the Palm Pre App Catalog now.

The Flixster Palm Pre application complements the Fandango app reviewed here previously. The Flixster movie app adds a social-networking component to movie information. You can see user reviews, ratings, and comments from within the app. In most other respects it is pretty much identical to the Fandango application. You can read Rotten Tomatoes user reviews, get details and showtimes for the latest playing movies, as well as buy tickets from within the application.

You can also see full trailers for movies, with the Pre’s landscape mode coming into its own with this feature. Speed is good, with no obvious stuttering or playback buffering with both Wifi and cellular data connections. Like the Fandango app, this connects seamlessly with your calendar so that when you purchase movie tickets the event is added immediately to your calendar. This is a useful app if you like the social aspects with reviews and more interactive stuff compared to the Fandango application.

The Music application on the Palm Pre is pretty straightforward and simple. You can view albums and tracks in a simple list view along with the associated cover art. The list of albums shows a number against the cover art representing the number of tracks within the album. Playing a song pulls up basic controls and the ability to randomize playback of tracks or repeat the same track. Swiping across the screen will go to the next or previous track.

You can load music on to the Pre in two ways: First, when the Pre is connected to your computer, the computer simply recognizes it as a mass storage device; you can drag and drop music files into the device this way. The other option is to do it through iTunes, where any DRM-free files can be transferred seamlessly. Either way, your Pre will recognize the file type and pull it into the Music application, so you can organize your music without worrying about where it’s sitting.
