Newsroom is an advanced RSS and News reader for the Palm Pre. The app lets you add News and RSS feeds, and can show full articles optimized for the Palm Pre’s layout and interface. In this sense, it can completely replace the Web browser for News-oriented browsing. The interface is excellent, and the perfectly formatted articles will let you actually read the content instead of zooming in and out at various spots. Going from one unread article to the next is as simple as swiping left or right across the Pre’s screen. Feeds are listed on a grid as icons that show the number of unread articles for each feed. You can have several pages of icons as you add more feeds.

You can add new feeds by searching for a feed or browsing a list of featured ones. You can also add an RSS feed directly by entering the URL. Newsroom integrates perfectly with the notification system and prompts you when new articles come in. There’s no way to read all new articles in one go, you’ll need to visit each page and tap on the icons with new numbers on them for each new article. Overall, this is a powerful and polished News and RSS reader with full-article support (not just snippets) and custom formatting that will almost certainly fulfill all your News browsing needs on the Palm Pre.

Card Ace is an excellent implementation of Texas Hold ‘em on the Palm Pre. Developed by the same folks behind Word Ace, which remains one of the best games on the Pre so far, Card Ace brings the same attention to detail and polished design to your Pre. It comes with full online play, including the ability to chat with other players while in the middle of a game. Your account is shared with Word Ace, so if you already have an account for that game, you can simply use it again here. You can then use the same set of chips you’ve been winning in Word Ace.

Gameplay is very, very good and offers a really immersive and social experience. Each player profile can have a photograph associated with it, making gameplay significantly more personal and engaging. In the works is the ability to buy additional chips and other in-game purchases. Once again, the app manages to present a lot of information and options in a surprisingly uncluttered and appealing manner – there’s a lot of stuff on screen, but it’s organized very well and blends in with regular gameplay. This free app is very well designed and offers full and engaging Texas Hold ‘em on the Palm Pre – a must download for all Pre gaming and cards fans.

One of the newer breeds of paid apps on the Palm App Catalog, Wobble Words is a word search game that pulls together bits of gameplay from other timeless games to offer an interesting and engaging application on the Palm Pre. The basic premise is to find as many words as possible against the clock. You form words by drawing gestures on a four-letter by four-letter grid. As you find words, new letters show up. Roughly speaking, you get more points for bigger words, but there’s finer grained points to be had since each letter has a specific number of points associated with it.

The scoring system is very well-designed, with intermittent “blank” letters that can play the role of any and all letters that complete a word. This means one or two “blanks” can push your score very high pretty quickly. You can also sacrifice points to refresh the grid completely to have another go if you’re drawing a blank on the current one. The interface and look-and-feel is very polished and customizable. Most aspects of the game are configurable, including sound, “shake to clear” and the theme. Overall, this is an excellent game for the Palm Pre – engaging, interesting, and easy on the eyes.

We are now entering the realm of paid apps – GolfPinFinder is a demo version (for now) of a comprehensive golf distance finder and scoring application for the Palm Pre. It has a wealth of features which are all supported by a database of over 8000 golf courses searchable by name. The app will find courses close to your current location. You can also add your own courses to GolfPinFinder. It includes yardages and optional hints for each hole and lets you add five custom points per hole for each course. You can also tailor the clubs to your own style and calibrate how long you really managed to hit your clubs.

The multiplayer scorecard can be emailed and GolfPinFinder will automatically launch the email app on your smartphone with pre-filled fields. The interface is very well done with a lot of attention to detail. You can configure your club settings before each round and tell the app which of your clubs are available for play. The large number of features and excellent design makes this one of the best Palm Pre apps at present. If you’re an avid golfer, you will find this app invaluable and while the price is yet to be seen, there’s no doubt GolfPinFinder sets a new benchmark on your smartphone in terms of depth and breadth of features.

Go To Lite is a waypoint marker that lets you “bookmark” specific points in the real world via GPS. This Palm Pre app is most useful to mark your cars position in a large parking lot or parking garage so that you may easily return to it once you’re done shopping. With that in mind, Go To Lite comes with a built-in “My Car” tab that creates a “waypoint” (the app’s name for these real-world “bookmarks”) for you with a minimum of fuss. The app comes with other quirky built-in waypoints, but the magic happens once you start making your own. You can use Go To Lite while doing any outdoor activity. You can even forget about addresses and street corners and simply create a waypoint instead.

The built-in compass offers another layer of simplicity and ease-of-use. The app comes with pretty sophisticated features, including the ability to create a log and mark the time and description of every waypoint. Waypoints can be sorted by name, date, or nearness to your current location. This means you can even use this app as a note-taking app that helps you complete tasks depending on where you are – simply create a new waypoint every time you tell yourself: “I need to do X the next time I’m here.” Go To Lite is a solid new app for the Palm Pre and introduces every smartphone owners secret dream app – an app to help you find your car in a large, baking hot parking lot.

gDial Pro brings Google Voice to the Palm Pre. Google Voice is a comprehensive and integrated telephony service that lets you hand-off call management, voice mail archiving and transcription, conference calling, call forwarding and a whole host of other wonderful features to this application. You will need a Google Voice account to use this app, and these are available only by invite at present. Google Voice basically presents you with a new phone number (porting your existing number is a feature yet to hit the service) that routes all your calls through a centralized interface. This allows you to do many magical things including viewing actual transcripts of your voice mails. It also brings visual voicemail to the Pre.

The interface is very slick and matches the Palm Pre’s own design sensibilities. gDial integrates with your existing contacts and allows you to dial any one of them with your Google Voice number. You can send and receive text messages through the GV service from right within the application. You can also configure your dial tone on the Pre with gDial Pro. The feature list includes full voice, text, and voicemail history so you can completely replace your existing phone interface habits with gDial if you wish to. Shaking your Pre will refresh your history information or clear your dialer or new SMS depending on which screen you are on. gDial Pro brings a remarkably useful and far-reaching service to the Pre in an easy-to-use, comprehensive, and slick package.

OpenTable is a restaurant reservation and reviews application for the Palm Pre. It lets you make free reservations in thousands of restaurants across the country with immediate confirmation of your reservation. The app is location-aware, so you can see restaurants close to your current location as well as view their availability. Sorting options include price, cuisine and availability. The app can be extremely useful on traditionally busy nights, weekends, and holidays. The app stands head-and-shoulders above its similarly themed competitors because in addition to letting you actually make reservations from within the app, it also lets you see the menu and integrates very well with other WebOS functions.

Other features are similar to what GoodFood offers: user reviews, ratings, location-aware mapping, directions to the establishment from your current location, etc. The OpenTable app also lets you send a quick email from within the app with restaurant and reservation details. The app integrates well with your Pre calendar, so reservations can be scheduled appropriately with your other appointments. This is one of the more comprehensive and interactive Palm Pre Apps and will be useful for almost every Pre owner and, for now, makes other restaurant and food review apps redundant on your Palm Pre.

The latest addition to the Palm Pre apps catalog is Evernote, the mind-mapping tool that can capture anything from notes and photos to webpages and business cards. With this Palm Pre app you can take notes, snap photos, set reminders, capture inspirations, and set bookmarks. The Evernote application for the Palm Pre synchronizes your accounts between your desktop, online, and Palm Pre. The application is pretty slick with a clean, easy-to-use interface and a powerful search feature that you can pull up from any screen. It syncs seamlessly with the cloud, and the only really noticable delay is during account setup – everything else happens behind the scene.

The Evernote package (desktop, Palm Pre, and cloud) also brings powerful behind the scenes intelligence. For instance, you can take a photo of a business card and Evernote will automatically add the right fields to your address book. It can also convert handwritten text so your notes are instantly searchable. The tool is very powerful if you enjoy capturing everything and organizing information. Others have found it to be a solution looking for a problem. Overall, this is a fantastic application, and a much needed organizer to round out the Palm Pre apps catalog.

Especially in light of the Pre’s ability to run multiple apps at once, there’s less and less need for a jack-of-all trades application. The Goodfood Palm Pre app by Goodrec is a great example of this. It helps you find nearby food joints that suit your tastes and come recommended by others like you. It hooks up to the popular social networking website and pulls in restaurant recommendations based on location, ratings, and price.

The default functionality immediately pulls up eateries nearby to your current location. You can then drill down based on rating, price, and distance. You can also see photographs taken by other diners in specific restaurants. This really helps in understanding portion sizes, presentation, and the quality of the establishment. Most diners also leave comments and reviews which are all available through the application. Mapping is built right in. The interface is very clean and elegant – this is a very polished and useful Palm Pre application.

The “Where” Palm Pre app is a GPS enabled location-aware application that helps you find businesses close by. It’s a wildly popular app available on most major smartphones and it’s the first application on the Palm Pre that really brings a good places directory with it along with integration with Yelp (excellent for viewing user reviews of establishments). The home screen of the app presents you with a set of categories including Movies, Starbucks, Traffic, News, etc. Digging deeper takes you into more detailed information about each category that is relevant to your current location.

The information is often very detailed. The movies section, for example, will automatically pull up theater locations close to you, showtimes, movie reviews, and trailers right within the app. This is one of the best and most widely used location-aware places directory in the mobile market today, and it’s great to see it on the Palm Pre. I have no doubt you’ll be able to pick from a plethora of such apps soon, but this is a great start.
